    Tombiruo: adaptasi novel ke filem dan representasi kepercayaan setempat

    Mengadaptasi novel ke filem bukanlah sesuatu yang baharu dalam industri perfileman. Sejak zaman awal pengenalan filem kepada masyarakat, naskhah yang baik mahupun laris terjual diangkat menjadi naskhah filem setelahnya. Filem-filem awal Hollywood misalnya mengambil naskhah novel terkenal seperti novel bersiri penyiasatan Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1894) yang telah difilemkan pada tahun 1900 dan juga filem A Trip to The Moon (1902) arahan Georges Melies daripada novel From The Earth to the Moon (1865). Begitu juga yang terjadi dengan industri perfileman tempatan. Novel seperti Rumah Itu Duniaku (1951) karya Hamzah Hussin yang dijadikan filem pada tahun 1963. Setelah itu, Ranjau Sepanjang Jalan (1966) karya Sasterawan Negara Shahnon Ahmad yang difilemkan pada tahun 1983 serta menerima beberapa anugerah dalam Festival Filem ke-4 pada tahun yang sama. Malah, novel ini kemudiannya difilemkan oleh pengkarya dari Kemboja dengan tajuk Rice People (1994). Novel Juara (1976) oleh Sasterawan Negara S. Othman Kelantan juga turut difilemkan di bawah arahan U Wei Haji Shaari pada tahun 1997 dan banyak lagi novel yang telah diadaptasikan kepada filem. Namun, naskhah yang diadaptasikan ini seringkali diselar kerana kurang atau tidak mampu mengangkat kesamaan penceritaan seperti naskhah novelnya. Ini lebih lagi dapat dilihat melalui ketidaktepatan representasi budaya setempat yang diangkat. Oleh itu, menerusi kajian ini, representasi kepercayaan setempat yang dipaparkan menerusi naskhah novel dan filem Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba akan dikenalpasti dan diperbincangkan.     Kepercayaan masyarakat Melayu pada dasarnya berpusat kepada amalan tradisi yang diwarisi. Namun, setelah kedatangan sistem beragama di Nusantara, agama juga kemudiannya turut menjadi salah satu asas kepercayaan masyarakat Melayu. Berlaku suatu pertembungan di antara amalan kebudayaan tradisional dan amalan agama dalam masyarakat Melayu. Ini mewujudkan bentuk kepercayaan ketiga yang dikenali sebagai kepercayaan popular. Idea asal ini adalah daripada Mohd Taib Osman (1989) dalam membina model konseptual sistem kepercayaan masyarakat Melayu. Masyarakat Melayu mengamalkan ritual-ritual berdasarkan kepada kepercayaan popular berkenaan. Malah wujud semacam kecelaruan dalam kalangan masyarakat Melayu dalam menanggapi amalan-amalan kepercayaan popular ini sebagai amalan-amalan agama. Kajian ini melihat bagaimana kepercayaan popular ini direpresentasikan menerusi filem-filem bergenre seram tempatan dalam tiga fasa iaitu fasa pertama (1957-1967), fasa kedua (1980-1990) dan fasa ketiga (2001-2011).     Mediating Role of Cultural Identity in the Relationship between Social Media Use Intensity and Social Media Use Purpose among Chinese International Students in Malaysia

    Social media has become essential for international students adjusting to a new environment. Previous research has shown that social media use purposes influence international students' cognition, psychology, and behavior. Limited studies have explored whether social media use purposes could be modified. This study investigated whether and how social media use intensity could influence use purpose by focusing on the mediating role of cultural identity among 213 Chinese international students studying in Malaysia. Data were analyzed using both SPSS and PROCESS macro. The findings revealed that social media use intensity positively predicted social media use purpose. Cultural identity (both Chinese and Malaysian cultural identity) partially mediated the relationship between social media use intensity and social media use purpose. Therefore, part of the impact of social media use intensity on social use purpose is achieved through cultural identity. By comparing the proportion of the mediating effect to the total effect, Malaysian cultural identity had a larger mediating effect than Chinese cultural identity. The results of this study could help improve the cross-cultural experience of Chinese students in Malaysia

    A Systematic Literature Review of Localization Strategies of the Global Format Reality TV in China in the Past Decade (2012-2022)

    The past few decades have witnessed the popularity of global format reality TV programs in China, paralleled by a growing academic interest in comprehending the process of localizing these format programs. However, the existing literature on the subject comprises diverse and fragmented selected cases, revealing a research gap in terms of a systematic exploration and comprehensive review of the adaptation process of format television programs in China. This study employs a systematic literature review to examine the localization of format reality shows in China over the past decades. It aims to provide practical strategies for format programs to enter the Chinese media market and identify the gaps in this area. The general research question is what strategies have been used to adapt format reality shows in China. A total of 40 articles from CNKI, Google Scholar, and Scopus are selected for qualitative synthesis. The findings indicate that the localization of format reality TV need to incorporate more local elements to enter the Chinese media market due to the cultural differences and the strict regulation from the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television of the People’s Republic of China (SARFT). Further research should investigate the impact of SARFT’s regulations on format programs and the subsequent shift towards local production in China

    Kepercayaan mistik masyarakat Melayu secara umumnya terdiri daripada tiga aspek kepercayaan iaitu tradisi, pegangan agama dan popular. Namun begitu, aspek lain seperti perubahan dalam sains dan teknologi, sistem sosial, ekonomi dan politik turut mempengaruhi kepercayaan mistik masyarakat Melayu. Hal ini jelas dilihat menerusi representasi kebudayaan dan agama dalam filem bergenre seram tempatan yang semakin hilang cerminan akar Melayunya.     A Case Study of the Ritual Space Construction of the Chinese Festival Series Program

    TV festival gala is one important form of ritual communication of traditional Chinese festivals. The Chinese Festival Series Program innovate the ritual construction path of the program while maintaining the sense of ritual of the traditional festival galas, making the Chinese Festival Series Program a representative work of Chinese festival galas in recent years. This study aims to explore the ritual space construction of the Chinese Festival Series Program. It adopted the case study approach by taking Chinese Festival Series Program as the research object, and analyzed the text of the programs mainly from the physical space, media space, narrative space and the associated space of history and reality. The analysis results demonstrated that breaking the single physical space and building diverse scenes can make the narrative more hierarchical, and allow the audiences to experience a more realistic program space. The addition of new technology also brings richness to the narrative space. The convenient interactivity of the new media platform creates an exclusive media interaction space for the audiences. Through the ritual space construction, the Chinese Festival Series Program associate the past space with the present space, allowing the audiences to develop memory-related activities in the ritual space

    Do communicators' emotional expressions in dance-themed visual expressions in humanities documentaries depend on the visual guidance of dance camera language? There is limited information related to humanities documentaries with dance as a theme in the literature. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the creator's visual guidance on an audience's perception of dance images. Based on a humanities documentary’s overall tone, the communicator selected appropriate dance sequences and dance clips and recorded them from a dancer's point of view to capture an image's moral expression and bring the humanities documentary to a climax. The study explored whether an audience’s perspective of visual information from a dance in which the dance body language is guided by a video varies from that perceived when watching the dance in the past. This analysis opens up new avenues for video display and dance representation for the expression of dance video, to satisfy an audience's sense of observation and communicate an emotional expression
